The Possession and Gift: As an american the values we share, our beliefs, and our freedoms comes with a huge price. Our service men and women across all branches of military risk their lives and sacrifice themselves and their families well-being to protect our civil liberties here and abroad in other nations who seek democracy. The gift I am offering is the gift of Healing. (Emotional)
Details: I am offering this gift to my good friend James Budd. He was a U.S. Marine who served three tours in Iraq. He wakes up every morning and looks at himself in the mirror and the person he sees is not who he was before Iraq. He is broken, like the shattered fragments of glass. He is like the many who return from war suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and many more illnesses psychological and physical doctors cannot cure. They prescribe him antidepressants just so he does not have suicidal thoughts. This is only one of the many drugs he cannot even pronounce or understand what benefit he gains from taking them besides feeling bloated and make him a vegetable dazing towards empty space soul less.
If I could offer him the ability to heal and become who he was before he left for war he would be the happy he once was. The friend who would visit and smile, played games, and who was very energetic full of life. A person who has not witness the atrocities of war such as death of his fellow marines, be-headings, and much more. Healing would remove his daily night tremors so he can finally rest without taking sleeping pills.
I had never had the chance to show gratitude in a form of art to my buddy James or the service men and women of america. I would like to say thank you for my freedom of expression so I can do what I love to do.
I had a very hard time drawing this piece unlike my other works of art. Maybe this one affects me more. Good luck to all those in this contest.
